Overview:

On July 29, 2011 there will be a mentor program entitled Project ASPIRATION that will be held at the historical Howard University in conjunction with the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Centennial Celebration. The centennial will attract more than 50,000 participants from all over the world. Our program will expose 250 black males ages 13 to 18 from all over the country to a variety of careers and life skills rooted in the cardinal principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift. The program will focus on careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and ways to prepare for success in those fields.

This one-day event will feature four interactive sessions lead by Brothers in the fields of STEM. The Brothers will engage the student participants (referred to as “Scholars”) about ways science, technology, engineering and math impact their everyday life and their duty to self, family and community. Our aim is to have each Scholar leave with a greater interest in and appreciation of these important fields and their ability to make positive contributions.

Share ideas and/or resources that help black males achieve higher education attainment and high aspirations on the volunteer registration form.

GB: If there is one thing you could change about yourself what would it be?
TB: I would change my view on reading, I don’t like to read, my mother love to read. I wish I got that trait from her

GB: What would be the perfect Pre Game meal?
TB: grilled BBQ chicken breast with blue cheese on the side, mashed potatoes, fresh garden salads, with French dressing, fresh cut pineapples, and a sports drink.

GB: If you could watch any college game day what would it be?
TB: the replay of a game that I just played in

GB: What was your most embarrassing Football moment?
TB: should not be telling you this, but it was in high school, night game at timber creek high, start of the 3rd quarter, I had to use the bathroom, #2. Ran off the field coaches thought I was hurt, I told them no I have to use the bathroom. So I had to run all the way inside use the bathroom then run back out. On my way out coach sent someone to find me but I was already on my way back to the field. They called a time out to try and waste time, I played DE and OT both ways and my back up was not getting the job down. I got back by the end of the time out, and we won the game

GB: If you could retire today what would you do with the rest of your life?
TB: coach high school ball in an urban city. I want to help the black youth, and travel on the off season

GB: What Bruhz do you look up to and why?
TB: have to start with the founder, without them I would not be a Man of Omega, 2nd would be William G Anderson, one of my chapter brothers. He is a man that worked for society as a teacher uplifting the youth and also works for the frat and big advocate for the young brothers at Monmouth University, another reason why I am an Omega Man today. 3rd Terik Tidwell, another brother who works hard for the frat and in life.

GB: What is your pre game ritual or warm up?
TB: listen to music, then this year the last song I listen to before it is time to go out is Dog got E, by Kevin McCall

GB: Where do you see yourself in 8 years?
TB: a member of the NJ state police, heavily active in my fraternity, and thoughts of starting a family

GB: Besides football, what is something else you have passion for?
TB: collecting Monopoly board games,

GB: If you could describe yourself in one word what would it be?
TB: unselfish

TB: I am a criminal justice major; my main goal is to one day get a federal job in law enforcement

TB: any day that the Lord blesses me to wake up. What I would do on that day? Spend time with my family and friends: talk, eat, play cards, and just have fun

GB: How important is it to give back to the community and what you would plan to do?
TB: giving back is what my life is bases off of, my grandmother told me to always be a leader. Do well in school so my younger cousins can see what good can come from doing well in school. I have taken that thought and applied it to life, I work hard in my life to show the children in my community what they can do if they just work for it. I come from Camden just like them and my family is med to low class just like most of the families in Camden. I also know people wit worst stories then I and they made their way out of Camden and did something positive with their life.

For decades the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II were largely ignored and denegrated despite official desegration of the U.S. military in 1948.

But eventually, starting in the 1980s, the recognition and honors began rolling in at national and local levels.

Retired Lt. Col. Thomas Mayfield of Willingboro flew Tuskegee fighter planes escorting U.S. bombers over Europe.

“It’s always a great day when we can honor the Tuskegee Airmen and all our veterans who persevered to protect our freedom.

Mayfield, a West Virginia native, has called Willingboro home since retiring from the Air Force in 1971. He later worked 15 years as a special ed teacher in Pemberton.

Mayfield came lives with his wife Barbara.

“I was in my third year of college when some of my friends said we should enlist, so I went with them,” he said. “Later that day, I decided I didn’t want to go, but the recruiting officer said I had signed the papers and that was that.” By 10 p.m. he was on a train heading for Ohio.

Mayfield tells stories about the harassment and discrimination they endured, and how the Tuskegee Airmen had to fight for the right to serve and even die.

“Perseverance got us through,” Mayfield said. “We stuck together. Otherwise, we’d never have made it.

The Birth of "Mighty" Epsilon Chapter

Founded: April 18, 1919

In 1919, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity bestowed upon New York City, her fifth chapter. On April 18, 1919, at the home of Brother A. Merral Willis, located at 24 W. 140th Street, nine Omega man gathered, and chartered the "Mighty" Epsilon chapter. Epsilon Chapter was organized for students attending Columbia University, New York University, City College of New York, and other institutions of higher learning in New York City. The charter members of Epsilon Chapter were Brothers A. Merral Willis, (charter member of Beta Chapter), Raymond George Robinson (7th Grand Basileus and charter member of Beta Chapter), Hastings E. Tompkins (Beta Chapter '16), John Gordon Dingle (Alpha Chapter '13), James Burnett Ford (Alpha '12), Osceola E. McKaine (Des Moines, Iowa War Chapter '16/Gamma Chapter '17), Henry M. Marlowe (charter member of Beta Chapter), W.P. Stanley (Beta Fall '14), and J. Herd Huddleson.

With the foundation in place, the brothers now had to select the men who would lead her in the right direction. Epsilon's first officers were Brothers A. Mrral Willis, Basileus, Osceola E. McKaine, Keeper of Records, J. Herd Huddleson, Keeper of Seals, and Hastings E. Tompkins, Chaplain. These were the first of many loyal sons of Omega who would lead Epsilon Chapter.

Barack Obama effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Barack Obama effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, becoming the first black candidate to lead a major party into a campaign for the White House. Vanquished rival Hillary Rodham Clinton swiftly signaled an interest in joining the ticket as running mate.

Obama arranged a victory celebration at the site of this summer's Republican National Convention - an in-your-face gesture to Sen. John McCain, who will be his opponent in the race to become the nation's 44th president.

The 46-year-old Obama outlasted Clinton in a historic campaign that sparked record turnouts in primary after primary, yet exposed deep racial and gender divisions within the party.

In a campaign of surprises, Clinton's comments about joining the ticket rated high.

According to one participant in an afternoon conference call among Clinton and members of the New York congressional delegation, Rep. Lydia Velasquez said she believed the best way for Obama to win over Hispanics and members of other key voting blocs would be to take the former first lady as his running mate.

"I am open to it," Clinton replied, if it would help the party's prospects in November, said the participant, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the call was a private matter.

Obama sealed his victory based on public declarations from delegates as well as from an additional 18 who had confirmed their intentions to the AP. The count also included five delegates Obama was guaranteed as long as he gained 15 percent of the vote in South Dakota and Montana later in the day. It takes 2,118 delegates to clinch the nomination.

Clinton stood ready to concede that her rival had amassed the delegates needed to triumph, according to officials in her campaign. They stressed that the New York senator did not intend to suspend or end her candidacy in a speech Tuesday night in New York. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they had not been authorized to divulge her plans.

Obama's triumph was fashioned on prodigious fundraising, meticulous organizing and his theme of change aimed at an electorate opposed to the Iraq war and worried about the economy - all harnessed to his own innate gifts as a campaigner.

With her husband's two-White House terms as a backdrop, Clinton campaigned for months as the candidate of experience, a former first lady and second-term senator ready, she said, to take over on Day One.

But after a year on the campaign trail, Obama won the kickoff Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3, and the freshman senator became something of an overnight political phenomenon.

"We came together as Democrats, as Republicans and independents, to stand up and say we are one nation, we are one people and our time for change has come," he said that night in Des Moines.

A video produced by Will I. Am and built around Obama's "Yes, we can" rallying cry quickly went viral. It drew its one millionth hit within a few days of being posted.

As the strongest female presidential candidate in history, Clinton drew large, enthusiastic audiences. Yet Obama's were bigger still. One audience, in Dallas, famously cheered when he blew his nose on stage; a crowd of 75,000 turned out in Portland, Ore., the weekend before the state's May 20 primary.

The former first lady countered Obama's Iowa victory with an upset five days later in New Hampshire that set the stage for a campaign marathon as competitive as any in the last generation.

"Over the last week I listened to you, and in the process I found my own voice," she told supporters who had saved her candidacy from an early demise.

In defeat, Obama's aides concluded they had committed a cardinal sin of New Hampshire politics, forsaking small, intimate events in favor of speeches to large audiences inviting them to ratify Iowa's choice.

It was not a mistake they made again - which helped explain Obama's later outings to bowling alleys, backyard basketball hoops and American Legion halls in the heartland.

Clinton conceded nothing, memorably knocking back a shot of Crown Royal whiskey at a bar in Indiana, recalling that her grandfather had taught her to use a shotgun, and driving in a pickup to a gas station in South Bend, Ind., to emphasize her support for a summertime suspension of the federal gasoline tax.

As other rivals quickly fell away in winter, the strongest black candidate in history and the strongest female White House contender traded victories on Super Tuesday, the Feb. 5 series of primaries and caucuses across 21 states and American Samoa that once seemed likely to settle the nomination.

But Clinton had a problem that Obama exploited, and he scored a coup she could not answer.

Pressed for cash, the former first lady ran noncompetitive campaigns in several Super Tuesday caucus states, allowing her rival to run up his delegate totals.

At the same time, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., endorsed the young senator in terms that summoned memories of his slain brothers while seeking to turn the page on the Clinton era.

In a reference that likened former President Clinton to Harry Truman: "There was another time, when another young candidate was running for president and challenging America to cross a new frontier. He faced criticism from the preceding Democratic president, who was widely respected in the party."

Merely by surviving Super Tuesday, Obama exceeded expectations.

But he did more than survive, emerging with a lead in delegates that he never relinquished, and proceeded to run off a string of 11 straight victories.

Clinton saved her candidacy once more with primary victories in Ohio and Texas on March 4, beginning a stretch in which she won primaries in six of the final nine states on the calendar, as well as in Puerto Rico.

It was a strong run, providing glimpses of what might have been for the one-time front-runner.

But by then Obama was well on his way to victory, Clinton and her allies stressed the popular vote instead of delegates. Yet he seemed to emerge from each loss with residual strength.

Obama's bigger-than-expected victory in North Carolina on May 6 offset his narrow defeat in Indiana the same day. Four days later, he overtook Clinton's lead among superdelegates, the party leaders she had hoped would award her the nomination on the basis of a strong showing in swing states.

Obama lost West Virginia by a whopping 67 percent to 26 percent on May 13. Yet he won an endorsement the following day from former presidential rival and one-time North Carolina Sen. John Edwards.

Clinton administered another drubbing in Kentucky a week later. This time, Obama countered with a victory in Oregon, and turned up that night in Iowa to say he had won a majority of all the delegates available in 56 primaries and caucuses on the calendar.

There were moments of anger, notably in a finger-wagging debate in South Carolina on Jan. 21.

Obama told the former first lady he was helping unemployed workers on the streets of Chicago when "you were a corporate lawyer sitting on the board at Wal-Mart."

Moments later, Clinton said that she was fighting against misguided Republican policies "when you were practicing law and representing your contributor ... in his slum landlord business in inner city Chicago."

And Bill Clinton was a constant presence and an occasional irritant for Obama. The former president angered several black politicians when he seemed to diminish Obama's South Carolina triumph by noting that Jesse Jackson had also won the state.

Obama's frustration showed at the Jan. 21 debate, when he accused the former president in absentia of uttering a series of distortions.

"I'm here. He's not," the former first lady snapped.

"Well, I can't tell who I'm running against sometimes," Obama countered.

There were relatively few policy differences. Clinton accused Obama of backing a health care plan that would leave millions out, and the two clashed repeatedly over trade.

Yet race, religion, region and gender became political fault lines as the two campaigned from coast to coast.

Along the way, Obama showed an ability to weather the inevitable controversies, most notably one caused by the incendiary rhetoric of his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

At first, Obama said he could not break with his longtime spiritual adviser. Then, when Wright spoke out anew, Obama reversed course and denounced him strongly.

Clinton struggled with self-inflicted wounds. Most prominently, she claimed to have come under sniper fire as first lady more than a decade earlier while paying a visit to Bosnia.

Instead, videotapes showed her receiving a gift of flowers from a young girl who greeted her plane.

It's that time again. Thanks for last year's support despite the
weather. I would like to take this opportunity to disseminate
information concerning our 43rd Mardi Gras.

I will have 100 tickets to sell to the "out of town" patrons up to the day of the event,
Friday, March 28, 2007 in the Radisson Penn Harris lobby. However if
you know you are coming and want tickets in advance, you can purchase
them with money orders or certified checks made out to: Kappa Omega
Mardi Gras 2007.

usually, the Saturday Frat House Set-Out, immediately following the
traditional Saturday morning basketball game. And if weather permits,
provision for Saturday morning golf will be available as well. This
year promises to be the best Harrisburg Mardi Gras yet. The Mardi
Gras is Kappa Omega's largest fundraiser.

John D. Skief, 59, an educator and political activist who labored all his adult life to promote self-reliance among African Americans, died Saturday after an apparent heart attack at his West Philadelphia home, his family said.
His wife, Tonya, said Mr. Skief had complained he wasn't feeling well on Friday. He was out of bed, unable to sleep, she said, when the attack occurred early the next morning. She said he died about 6 a.m. at Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Mr. Skief was a promoter of the charter-school movement in Pennsylvania and was founder of Harambee Institute of Science and Technology, one of the first charter schools to be approved in Philadelphia, in 1997.

Harambee, which today has about 500 students, had its roots as an after-school program in 1974 in a storefront at 60th and Walnut Streets. Mr. Skief later introduced a full-day program during a city teachers' strike.

Mr. Skief had been introduced to the civil-rights struggle in the 1960s by his father, John D. Skief Sr., who had marched with Philadelphia NAACP leader Cecil B. Moore.

He was involved in a 12-year movement to elect the city's first black mayor beginning the year after his graduation from Cheyney University. He worked as a campaign organizer for Democrats Hardy Williams in 1971, Charles Bowser in 1975 and W. Wilson Goode in 1983. It was Goode who finally achieved the goal.

Goode, speaking yesterday in an interview, said Mr. Skief's educational achievements impressed him even more than his political activism.

"He was a passionate advocate for education of young African American students," Goode said. " . . . He went out of his way to make sure that kids got what they needed to succeed."

Mr. Skein continued to be active in mayoral politics until 1999, when he backed former state welfare secretary John White Jr. in an unsuccessful Democratic primary battle.

White said yesterday that Mr. Skief was an expert at training election-day workers on how to get out the vote for a candidate.

But like Goode, White said of Mr. Skief: "His passion was education."

Mr. Skief went to West Philadelphia's John Bartram High School. At Cheyney University, from which he graduated in 1970, he was a record-setting high jumper and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

He began his career as a history teacher at Benjamin Franklin High School and later taught at three other city high schools: Edison, West Philadelphia and University City.

His interest in what his wife called "alternative" schools began with his growing conviction that "the public schools were not serving African Americans the way they should," she said.

He had been working to add a high-school program at the Harambee school, which now serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

His son Masai, 26, who teaches math and science at the school, said Mr. Skief hoped to begin a program next fall in which high school students would work online at home from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, then go into the school building from 3:30 to 6. Saturday classes were also planned.

"He said he'd hang up his gloves and retire when he graduated his first senior class out of high school," Masai Skief said.

Besides his wife and son Masai, Mr. Skief is survived by three children: Terrell, 38; Kimberly, 35, and Kalima, 19. He had a son, Damani, who was shot to death in Philadelphia 10 years ago, his wife said.

A memorial service is planned to run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Pinn Memorial Baptist Church, 54th Street and Wynnefield Avenue, West Philadelphia.

HOW DO you create dynamic change in a community?
For Baba John (Skief), it was a lifelong question that he answered through the arts initially, and then through education. It is a powerful and deep wound to the black community and to the city to have lost such a large and charismatic figure who was overflowing in that sense of consciousness and community empowerment as well.

The work that John Skief spent his lifetime on laid the foundation on which the black arts, and, yes, education reform, are resting on in Philadelphia today.

The black arts movement in Philly followed the black arts movement of the '60s.

John and his peers were bearers of the torch, a torch ignited by that first black arts movement - and then the civil-rights movement, and carried into the 1970s by young lions like John.

In an often uncredited way, John's life's work made a great difference in the arts, cultural and even educational scenes of Philadelphia. Once upon a time, celebrating Kwanzaa was as foreign to black people as it would be for them to celebrate Hanukkah. But with John leading the way, the city held its first Kwanzaa celebration in the 1970s.

Following this landmark achievement, John went on to build one of the first charter schools in the city, an Afro-centric model no less modeled on the Kwanzaa principles of unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

Having first met John as a child 30 years ago, and having worked closely with him as an adult, just to be in his presence inspired you to want to go out and change the world.

Everything he envisioned 30 years ago, he made come true. Citywide Kwanzaa celebrations - he did that. Paving the way for mandatory teacher and student learning of African-American history and culture - he did that. Getting an old schoolhouse and turning it into a charter school - he did that. Building a charter school up from the ground up in a black community - he did that. Living long enough to make his vision a reality . . . yes, he did that, too.

His death is a terrible loss for the city at a time when the community needs leadership like his in education.

But don't grieve for him. Celebrate, to a conga drumbeat and a resounding trumpet; celebrate, for his was an inspiring life that rejoiced in celebration every chance he could get.

In closing, let me say this: Death comes like a thief in the night, and it will steal your energy, it will steal your passion, it will steal your motivation to do much of anything.

But what will challenge death is celebration, celebration of life. There is too much work to be done to allow grief to steal our motivation to move forward. And so I ask, how will you celebrate his legacy? Focus on that, and each of us will find the energy and inspiration to do what we need to do.

"They're fraternity boots," said Faulkner, who explained that he joined Omega Psi Phi at Hampton two years ago. "Omegas like to say we travel 500 miles in these boots, and that's what it symbolizes to me.

Then a "drill sergeant" who was dressed in all fatigue with a matching hat, had them stepping and making dog faces.

In honor of this being the final school year before the merger of all the colleges at the University with the exception of Cook, the Black Student Union hosted its first annual Unity Week. Prior to this year, the event was known as Unity Day, which featured a concert as its marquee program. In an effort to place a larger emphasis on unity, the BSU, as well as other student organizations, decided to transform the day into a weeklong event in hopes of preparing the University for the unification of the student body with the merging of the colleges.The week, which began last Sunday, featured contributions from the Liberated Gospel Choir, Hillel Foundation and Jewish Ministries, Omega Psi Phi, Verbal Mayhem Slam Poetry Society, Minority Education at Cook College Alliance, Rutgers College Program Council, West Indian Student Association, La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc."The goal was to try to get different organizations, that would usually not do things together, to work together to unite all campuses," said BSU President Pat Henry, a Livingston College sophomore. "The main point is to unify all."While all events experienced a good turn out, Caribbean Day seemed to be the most popular. WISA held the event for the 29th consecutive year Saturday on the front lawn of the Livingston Student Center. The festival featured a carnival, poetry, dancing, stepping by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., dance contests, local performers, a cultural fashion show with designs from Lollipop, LH Design and Choko Lat, and an encore performance by reggae artist Beenie Man.Sponsors for the festival included the University College Governing Association and the Black Student Union. In the 29 years since WISA has held its annual Caribbean Day, this year has been the most successful, said Rachel Abraham, a Rutgers College senior. The success of the event was not only measured in terms of the turnout, but also for the amount of effort that went into planning it. Many fundraisers and grant propositions were involved with the planning of the event, Abraham said.

Barrett Charles Soul Rood Restaurant at 5920 Green St. in Germantown, is owned and operated by Super Bowl XL champion Barrett Charles Brooks and his wife, Sonji. In addition to serving some of the best soul food in the city, the restaurant offers live entertainment, networking opportunities and an at-home atmosphere. "The family intermingles and really comes together around the dinner table," Barrett said. "The restaurant is an extension of our family." The couple had talked for years about opening a restaurant, and planned to name it after a cookbook Sonji had recently finished, "From Sonji's Kitchen, for Barrett Charles."

Well the wait is finally over, the book has arrived. For those that were not informed about this artistic writing journey that i have been traveling, let me bring you up to speed.

I have written my first novel entitled Timeless: A series of intimate love tales. The book is about a young boy who experiences several love infatuation up through manhood until he finds the love of his life. The novel shares the experiences of a young man who matures through 70's 80's and 90's, which many of you maybe able to identify way.
